OUR PROGRAMMING STRATEGY IN MUGU
To effectively fight poverty in Mugu, our self-help programmes focus on several key objectives:
- Reducing maternal and infant mortality
- Supporting girls’ and boys’ education, especially in areas affected by the earthquakes in 2015
- Improving sanitation and hygiene in rural communities
- Sustainable management of natural resources
- Supporting sustainable income generation
To achieve this, our programme activities include:
- Establishment of rural Birth Centres to ensure safe deliveries, as well as professional antenatal and postnatal care
- Organise health camps in remote locations
- Support of adequate school infrastructure, enrolments, and teacher capacity
- Conduct hygiene and sanitation awareness
- Setting-up toilets and hand-washing facilities
- Develop and implement tailored water supply concepts
- Introducing smoke-free stoves and solar energy
- Boosting kitchen gardens and small-scale animal husbandry
- Establish saving and microcredit groups
- Sponsor young, ambitious men and women from remote and poor communities to undertake medical or agricultural training
These initiatives complement and support one another. We provide long-term support to the communities we are working with, always seeking active participation and contribution from the beneficiaries. A team of 25 – 30 front line staff, including project managers, social workers, and health professionals, is based right at our project sites. After three to five years, we hope that families are able to graduate from our support and enjoy greater health, education, sustainability, and most importantly, self-determination.
