Children's Home: Project

Day care centre - more street children finding a home

We recently opened a day care centre for another fifteen children. Through this centre, we are now able to gradually introduce these children to a new life and environment, so that they will eventually be ready to move to one of our children's homes.

The children who currently attend our day care centre have been chosen from the group of children that we targeted before, i.e. children who ended up on the street due to leprosy in their family.

We want to give our "novices" a chance to become accustomed at their own pace to the new environment and lifestyle, for example through learning and play groups, medical clinic appointments, social care and sympathetic counselling that will enable the children to deal with their past.

Many things that we take for granted in our daily lives are completely new to these children. We therefore want to make sure that they are properly guided and accompanied with love in all the steps we wish them to take. Our care workers assist them in finding their own daily routine, from brushing their teeth twice a day to regular showers. We show them how to dress neatly. They are encouraged to have regular daily meals, meet other children for play, arts and crafts activities and learn to share their fun, worries, sorrow and fears. By ensuring that they enjoy a caring and loving environment free of violence, we hope that they will be able to gain new confidence in a better future.

We are delighted with the new day care centre, as there is nothing more rewarding than offering a child in need a chance for a better future. A number of boys and girls have transferred from our first children's home, as it became available again after the renovation work was completed. They now have access to a large garden, which has become their preferred playground.

Our "go-ahead kids" are thrilled with the extra space they now have and support the newcomers in finding their place in their new community. The day care children often visit us in the children's homes, be it for their regular medical check-ups by Vinita or to celebrate birthdays, which are always very happy occasions attended by young and old.

Since July 2010, they attend the Asha Deep Vidjay School. The gradual introduction to structured learning and school attendance over the previous months in the day care centre is already bearing fruits. All children successfully completed their first year in school and are eager to tell us about all the new things they are learning.
